Professing faith in professional settings can sometimes lead to rejection or persecution. However, neither happened to head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, Frank Reich, when he acknowledged his dependence on God for two big victories that occurred 30 years apart. He started out sharing words of encouragement in a post-game press conference in November, which led to a powerful testimony that morphed into a sermonette.
Reich explained that three decades ago, in 1993 as a player on the Buffalo Bills team he was a fill-in for the injured starting quarter back and led the team to a come-from-behind win that became known in the NFL as "The Come Back." Fast forward to 2021, now as the coach to the opposing team, he led the Colts to victory as their head shot caller at the very stadium in which he had triumphed three decades prior.
Before answering any questions he acknowledged God for the team's journey to the top, quoting the lyrics of Brian Littrell's "God Alone": Christ alone will I glory, though I could pride myself in battles won, for I have been blessed beyond measure, and by his strength alone I overcome.
He said the team had been using the metaphor of climbing Mt. Everest to make it to the top.
"It doesn't take long to figure out this metaphor does not merely apply to football.
Another interpretation of the metaphor is that it did not matter which team he was on as long as God remained his head coach he could be victorious.
In the brief "off script" moment the coach spread the Gospel to the media where his message could be multiplied and perpetuated around the country.
