Remembering Rev. Jesse Louis Jackson's Legacy of Hope
As Civil Rights Stalwarts Journey Home Draws Diverse Support
Rev. Jackson, a Civil Rights leader passed away on February 17 at age 84. His homegoing service—fittingly titled The People’s Celebration—drew thousands . Three former presidents and a vice president shared remarks about their relationship with him -- Presidents Joe Biden, Barack Obama and Bill Clinton and Vice President Kamala Harris. Rev. Jackson was a global advocate for social justice, a two‑time presidential candidate, and a protégé of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Through the Rainbow PUSH Coalition he founded in 1971, he championed economic empowerment, voting rights, international diplomacy, and the protection of marginalized communities. The gathering reflected the spirit of his life’s work: open to all, rooted in community, and centered on the people he fought for across six decades. Jackson coined many memorable slogans, often speaking on like a street poet. One of his most resonate sayings was "Keep hope alive," which became thematic during the service. Rev. Jackson’s journey—from a segregated library to the global stage—remains a testament to what conviction, faith, and relentless advocacy can achieve. His voice, his vision, and his insistence that America live up to its highest ideals continue to guide the generations he inspired.
